Cathedral

F
ormed in early 1991, Cathedral emerged as a pioneer of the nineties underground U.S. neo-progressive scene. This Washington DC quintet features Ted Thompson on vocals, Gary Sisto on guitar, Michael Hounshell on bass, Todd Braverman on keyboards, and Mark Copney on drums.

Cathedral’s 1992 debut CD, Kingdom of Ends, established the band as a vital player in the brewing progressive renaissance. 1994 saw the release of the second Cathedral CD: There in the Shadows. From the driving rhythm of the opening track Holy War, the pastoral shades of Junk Drawer, the heavy terror of Renfield, to the soulful musings of the epic Existential Crisis, each song displays a different mood, texture, and atmosphere, indicative of Cathedral’s eclecticism. There in the Shadows has become an important contribution to the neo-progressive movement. Cathedral is mentioned several times in Jerry Lucky’s book The Progressive Rock Files.

Cathedral has since disbanded; both Todd Braverman and Gary Sisto have relocated to New York City. Todd’s new band Ad Infinitum released a very successful CD on Kinesis in 1998. Contact Gary at or Ted Thompson at for Cathedral information, or visit the Cathedral website.
