Cathedral - There in the Shadows

Cathedral continue to develop on their second CD. With eight songs spanning 65 minutes, each track is a mini-epic. The results recall Jadis, Pendragon, and Pallas in their prime, with lots of Steve Hackett-style guitar work and a new heavier element showing itself. There is great diversity among the tracks, ranging from a Genesis 12-string style piece, to a gorgeous ballad featuring Tony Banks-style organ and piano, to a stunning 3-part epic that pays homage to Nektar, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin, all in the same song! Kinesis’ Cathedral are no relation to the British metal band of the same name.

Note the current incarnation of There in the Shadows is a CD-R (recordable CD) with a full-color label printed directly on the disc and the original professionally-printed 8-page booklet and traycard. These are silver CD-Rs, nearly indistinguishable from a replicated CD. We guarantee them to be defect-free and will replace them at any time free of charge.

This was one of the best - and most surprising - discs this reviewer heard last year, without question. Cathedral displays a well-crafted, unique, and original sound that should make every American prog fan want to salute. Young vocalist Ted Thompson’s voice and delivery are powerful and passionate, while guitarist Gary Sisto, keysman Todd Braverman, bassist Mike Hounshell, and drummer Mark Copney concoct a potent progressive brew, blending elements of everyone from Marillion to Led Zeppelin to Genesis to Pink Floyd, while sounding like none of them... There in the Shadows contains some of the freshest and most unique prog rock this reviewer has heard... we have this and their first disc Kingdom of Ends to remind us how special they really were. [Progression]

The music has lots of variation and keeps you captivated right to the end of the 65-minutes. I very much enjoyed listening to There in the Shadows and I think Cathedral will please lots of ‘heavier’ progrock fans. [Background]

There are similarities to their previous release, but Cathedral have honed their style into something more original and more varied... Though (guitarist) Sisto's style is strongly reminiscent of [David Gilmour of Pink Floyd], it actually helps him stand out among the many faceless neo-prog guitar players... In all, another solid album from Cathedral, sure to please fans of their first album, as well as attract new fans. [Panorama]

A fine collection of songs which remain varied and beautifully performed. The instrumentation and vocals blend together to create stories of power and grace... Well worth the exploration of purchase, Cathedral will have something for anybody who enjoys progressive rock. [FishNet Indie Review]

Cathedral -
Kingdom of Ends

Cathedral - Kingdom of EndsCathedral was an art/epic/progressive rock band from Washington D.C. Taking their early inspiration from bands such as Marillion and IQ, Cathedral evolved a style which encompasses, among others, Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, and Nektar. Plenty of instrumental fireworks in these long tracks, with contrasts in dynamics, tempo, and mood. Behind the brooding lyrics and grand musical developments is always a strong song with memorable melodies. Eight tracks, 55 minutes.

Note the current incarnation of Kingdom of Ends is a CD-R (recordable CD) with a full-color label printed directly on the disc and the original professionally-printed 8-page booklet. These are silver CD-Rs, nearly indistinguishable from a replicated CD. We guarantee them to be defect-free and will replace them at any time free of charge.

Their sound blends tried and true progressivisms into an accessible format, fronted by lead vocalist Ted Thompson, while still offering plenty of instrumental fire and spirited solos. At times they may remind of Pendragon in earlier years, but such a comparison only accounts for an overall sound, and doesn't factor in Cathedral’s superior compositional skills; their instrumental passages deliver far more eloquent and provocative moments than the aforementioned... Fans of the neo-progressive sound will surely enjoy this album beginning to end. [Exposé]

Kingdom of Ends rocks convincingly in the best Marillion tradition... Cathedral are enough in love with their 80’s fellows so that Kingdom of Ends, with only minor-key variations, rests comfortably side by side with the best of them. [i/e]

From the opening track, it’s clear the band are fond of powerful climaxes, crashing chords of drama, and upfront keyboards... This is progressive rock that is both old and new but above all different... Cathedral are a breath of fresh air to these jaded ears. [Angry]

For the most part, Cathedral fall into the Genesis/IQ/Marillion neo-prog camp, but they do it very well. There are also evident Pink Floyd influences, mainly in the guitar. This is an album I would listen to as often as IQ’s The Wake or Twelfth Night’s Fact and Fiction... Cathedral have penned appealing compositions with memorable melodies. The longer tunes... have several sections of tension and release that give the songs direction and purpose. Cathedral stand head and shoulders above most others in this (neo-prog) genre. [Gibraltar]

The musicianship is exemplary. Influenced by bands like Genesis, Marillion, and FM, Cathedral forges a distinctive music... You can easily hear Steve Hackett’s influence in Gary Sisto’s chops... Cathedral is a domestic band on the rise. [Audion]

A musically strong band, Cathedral is difficult to categorize... They have a strength of familiarity without sounding like mimics. It sounds as though they have been influenced by bands such as Genesis and Marillion, yet were able to carve out an identity of their own. [FishNet Indie Review]

This is a fine release from one of the best American acts around at present. [A Flower]
